Quilt Stuff

Here's a place that I will put some quilt 'stuff' to serve as a reference for myself and hopefully others.

Setting Squares on Point

Here's a great video

Great points made:

  1. Keep bias sewn to squares and the straight of grain on the outside corners.
  2. Quilt math for corner setting triangles and side setting triangles based on the size of the Finished Block (FB).
  • Corner setting triangles are half square triangles (square cut in half).  To calculate the size of your square you take your Finished Block Size and do the following math:
    • (FB/1.414) + .875" (7/8")= size of the square you are to cut.  Round up to give yourself  a cut to at least the nearest 1/4" derivative (next inch/.25/.50/.75) to give some room to trim down.  Easy.  No special ruler.  Use your cell phone to calculate.
    • Cut your square directly on the diagonal 1 time to create 2 half square triangles (HST).
  • Side Setting Trianges are Quarter Square Triangles (Square cut on each diagonal).  Similar math concepts based on the Finished Block size.
    • (FB x 1.414) + 1.25 (1 1/4")  = size of the square you are to cut.
    • Cut your square on each diagonal carefully to create 4 Quarter Square Triangles (QST)

Eight Pointed Star Tutorials

From Edyta Sitar

From Dee Christopher  Personally, I don't like all the unpicking, but the point is to see methods and adopt those that work for you.

Shar Jorgensen's method of insets which I think is the best.
